By the end of 2014, there are 150 stated-owned research and development institutions, and scientific, technical information and literature institutions at and above the county level in Guangzhou. In the whole city, there are 17 academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences, 20 academicians of Chinese Academy of Engineering, 7 National Engineering Research Centers, 11 National Engineering and Technological Research Centers, 11 National Engineering Laboratories, 246 provincial Engineering Technology Research and Development Centers, 247 municipal Engineering Technology Research and Development Centers, 2 state-level University Science Parks, and 1,662 identified new high-tech enterprises.

Up to the beginning of 2015, there are 28 laboratories, 18 engineering centers and 10 quality inspection centers of state-level. The production value of high-tech industries above a designated scale reached 800.136 billion yuan, up 9.1%. The number of newly increased invention patent applications is 14,589, 4,590 of which have been granted. Tianhe-2, housed by the National Supercomputer Center in Guangzhou, has been the fastest supercomputerin the world for the fourth time in succession.
Emerging Industry

In 2013, Guangzhou built strategic emerging industries, including information technology industry, biology and health industry, new material and high-end manufacturing industry, fashion and creative industry, new energy, energy conservation and environment protection industry, and new energy automobile industry. Research has also been carried out in fields such as software and information service industry, high-end electronic information industry, biology and health industry, and new energy & new material industry.

Science and Technology Service Industry

In 2013, Guangzhou served a total of 250 top-level talents through the “thousand talents program”, transformed 80 achievements of advanced science and technology, and cultivated 10 scientific and technological enterprises, set up the Public Service Platform for Science and Technology Service Industry which consists of the sub-platform for science and technology service resource information and the network for scientific and technological innovation service. Throughout the year, 8,687 technical contracts were identified and registered, the total contract value reached 22.284 billion yuan, with an increase of 12.5% over the previous year, and the turnover of technological transactions was 21.382 billion yuan, up 39.9%. The recognized demonstration enterprises of science and technology service industry has totaled 56, including the second batch of 33 ones. 58 science and technology service enterprises were rated as the Top 100 Science and Technology Service Enterprises in Guangdong, accounting for 53.7% of the provincial total.

Science and Technology Promoting Agriculture

In 2013, 38 major projects of science and technology for people's livelihood and tackling key problems in science and technology were approved and initiated, with financial support of 14.30 million yuan. New species of flora and fauna were studied and developed by selection, technical research on rapid propagation and high efficient planting-raising was carried out, technical standard on large-scale production were formulated, and technology application of flora and fauna industrialization was organized. Research on fine and deep processing technology for farm products was launched, study on the technology and equipment of the storage, transportation and preservation of special fresh agricultural products and on modern logistics technology were reinforced, research and industrialization on the quality control technology of farm products, new type healthy food, functional food and ingredients were promoted.
