Guangzhou covers a total area of 7343.4 square kilometers, accounting for 4.21% of Guangdong province’s land area. On February 12 of 2014, after the approval of State Council, Guangzhou combined the previous Huangpu District and Luogang District into the new Huangpu District, set up Conghua District to replace Conghua City and set up Zengcheng District to replace Zengcheng City. On May 29 of 2015, Zengcheng formally becomes a district of Guangzhou. On August 12 of 2015, Conghua formally becomes the largest district in Guangzhou (covers an area of nearly 2000 square kilometers).

In 2014, Guangzhou was home to 13.08 million people, 64.4% of which were registered residents and 85.43% of which were urban residents. From the end of 2004 to the end of 2013, the residents in Guangzhou increased 3.27 million, up 33.8% over the period; the registered residents increased 0.95 million, up 12.8% over the period.
