Located on the south bank of the Pearl River and surrounded by it, Haizhu is the only district in Guangzhou that is on an island. It covers 90.40 square kilometers with a river-front of 47.35 kilometers. The population in this district is 877,000.
Haizhu District, which enjoys a long history, can be dated back to the Eastern Han Dynasty (25–220 BC). There are, therefore, many cultural relics and ancient buildings in the area including Yungui Bridge, Pazhou Tower and Chigang Tower all built during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644 AD). The ancient coast that witnessed the making of Haizhu Island, the site of marshal Sun Yat-sen's residence, and Shixiangyuan, residence of Ju Lian, pioneer painter of Lingnan Style are also located here. Additionally, the famous institution of higher learning, Sun Yat-sen University is in this district.
Haizhu District is also famous for its unique ecosystem which is composed of rivers, inlets, forests and gardens, all of which make Haizhu District an ideal place for people to work and live.
Haizhu District boasts a well-developed system of water transport. Through complicated waterways, goods can be shipped to any places within the urban area as well as to the ports on the Pearl River Delta and area coastal ports. Too, ships at the ferry terminals in the district can send passengers to coastal cities including Shantou (in Guangdong Province), Haikou, Sanya (in Hainan Province) and Xiamen (in Fujian Province).
At present, Haizhu District is working to develop Binjiang Lu into a street featuring Lingnan (South China) Culture characteristics and providing services in entertainment and tourism. Jiangnan Dadao, Jiangnan Xi Lu and Baogang Dadao are sites where shopping malls and business services are centered . Guangzhou Da Dao Nan is slated to be a center for collecting and distributing goods of various types; Pazhou is currently engaged in convention and exhibition services as well as information and business services; Xingang Lu, neighboring the Sun Yat-sen University, will be developed into a science and technology center; an environmental protection zone will be where hundreds of hectares of fruit trees will develop and grow into an eco-tourism center. As a result, this area will certainly promote economic development in Haizhu District and even in greater Guangzhou.
