NMTS betters rush-hour traffic for commuters
The 24 non-motorized traffic areas will be set up in the peripheral region, covering 11 residential districts, including Wushan, Huajing New Town, Sun Yat-sen University (south campus) and Pazhou. The NMTS in this region is to promote the non-motorized transportation within the region, including newly built non-motorized passageways, public bikes, pedestrian cross-street system and bicycle interchanges within three kilometers of metro stations. So daily commuters in these districts will have more means of transportation and enjoy better traffic condition during their commute.

NMTS makes travel easier and more secure in GZ
In the core region, non-motorized tourist routes will be set up in the areas with historical and cultural scenic spots, connecting different attractions. For the commercial areas in the old neighborhoods, roads will be precisely designed or redesigned with better floor decoration and virescence. That means getting around in these areas is going to be much easier and more secure, also visitors will be able to ride a bike to visit many a scenic spot in a row, such as Shamian, Shangxiajiu Road, Chen Clan Temple, and Museum of the Western Han Dynasty Mausoleum of the Nanyue King.
In the ecology region, the system will be closely connected with the surrounding waterways and nature. It consists of non-motorized passageways, improved pedestrian cross-street system, newly built bicycle rental stations, and other facilities, which are to encourage residents living within three kilometers of metro stations to choose bicycle + rail transit + water bus to travel around.
Voices form the society
Wang Zechu, deputy director of the Public Consultation Watch-Dog Committee of Guangzhou’s Key City Construction Projects, suggested that Guangzhou’s NMTS should cover both major roads and footpaths, prioritize non-motorized transportation from residential areas to metro stations, hospitals, schools, etc, so as to benefit the citizens.
People from NGO Bike Guangzhou have pointed out that there are three major challenges for Guangzhou’s NMTS: cycleway often being occupied, hard to cross the road, and incompatible public bike rental systems.
