The departure tax refund policy returns 11 percent of taxes paid on at least 500 yuan of commodities bought in Guangzhou by foreigners and people from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan in designated tax refund shops. The rules require eligible recipients to dwell continuously in China for no more than 183 days and leave the country within 90 days after they make their purchases.

For the past year, the policy has benefited many overseas visitors from more than 70 countries and regions, including Malaysia, Australia, the United States, Singapore, and China's Hong Kong and Taiwan. The departure tax refund shops are mainly located at Tinho Town, Beijing Lu, Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Street and Baiyun International Airport.

With regard to consumer goods, their types are becoming more varied and abundant, and the proportion of high-value goods is increasing. More than 10 kinds of commodities are included in the list of tax refundable goods, such as clothes, suitcases, shoes, hats, ornaments, clocks and watches, cellphones, cosmetics, baby products, home appliances, and books.

Process to get tax refund:

1. Purchase tax refundable product.

2. Get a tax refund application form from the shops where you buy items.

3. Declare departure tax refund to the customs with products and an application form when departing China.

4. Officials from the customs will check and sign the documents.

5. Apply for refund at the tax refund agencies located in isolated areas of entry and exit ports.

6. Follow the protocol to collect the refunded tax; if the sum exceeds 10,000 yuan, it will be refunded by bank transfer.
