Guangzhou marks sister city relations with Linkoping in Sweden
Update: 2017-09-07     Source: lifeofguangzhou.com
A Guangzhou culture and art troupe presented an evening of performances, including Cantonese opera, in Linkoping, Sweden on September 2 to mark the 20th anniversary of the establishment of an international sister city relationship between the two cities. This is the first time for the Guangzhou International Sister City Culture and Art Troupe to visit a sister city after its establishment as well as the first performance of the 2017 Guangzhou Culture Week in Northern Europe.

Cantonese opera, also called Guangdong drama, originated from Nanxi (Southern drama) and is popular in the Lingnan area, with unique costumes for each of its roles. The opera was listed in the first batch of National Intangible Cultural Heritages in 2006 and listed as a World Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO in 2009.

The evening, which consisted of five programs, opened with string music by the Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra. The Guangzhou Cantonese Opera Troupe performed the Cantonese opera “Bai Long Guan”, while Fang Jinlong, China's famous folk music artist and representative of the modern five-string pipa, performed ancient Chinese melodies. Wang Cong, dubbed China's chief jazz diva, refreshed the audience with two famous songs — “Jing Ye Si” ("A Tranquil Night") and “Zhaojun Chu Sai” ("Zhaojun Departs Frontier") — by melding jazz music with traditional Cantonese opera aria. “Wu Yun" ("The Charm of Martial Arts"), a modern dance performed by the Guangzhou Song and Dance Theater, wowed the audience with strength and beauty as well as vigor and softness.

Linkoping, the fifth-largest city in Sweden, established a sister city relationship with Guangzhou in 1997. The two cities have since developed diversified exchanges and cooperation in a large number of fields.
