Update: 2017-10-30     Source: lifeofguangzhou.com
The 10th Guangzhou Friendship Games concluded yesterday at Tianhe Sports Center. Some 1,118 players from over 70 countries and regions competed in basketball, five-a-side football, tennis, badminton, table tennis and bowling. Among the participants were representatives of 18 local colleges and universities, officials and their family members from 13 consulates general, and athletes from trade unions and chambers of commerce.

First held in 1998, the Guangzhou Friendship Games has developed from mountain hiking in the earliest events to competition with six ball games, to match the increasing number of expats in Guangzhou. The numbers of Americans, Japanese and Koreans rank among the top three of all foreign residents in Guangzhou. Most of the permanent residents are employees of Sino-foreign joint ventures, Chinese-foreign cooperative enterprises and foreign-owned companies, their families and international students.

"The event has served as a bridge that helps enhance the exchanges and mutual understanding between locals and international friends from all over the world,” said Tu Hongzhe, deputy inspector of the Foreign Affairs Office of the Guangzhou Municipal Government, which organized the event.

Shome, an Indian student from Nanfang Medical University described the games as an amazing experience. He had a great time in playing blowing as a participant and watching the basketball games his classmates played against with the team of Yew Wah International Education School. About life in the city, "Guangzhou is a city you can easily adapt to. It's hot, but not too much for us," Fred Adams, who works in the Consulate-General of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in Guangzhou, told Silk Road Post. "I love the food here. Sichuan food is my favorite."
