Global city practitioners discuss innovative urban transportation in Guangzhou

 Why transportation in Guangzhou is so convenient? How the city can regulate its large amount of automobiles and shared bikes well? Global city leaders, practitioners get the chance to find solutions to improve urban transportation on a workshop held in the city from Oct 30 to Nov 3.

On October 30, the opening ceremony of the 2017 Workshop for Thought Leaders: Innovation in Urban Transportation for the Future City took place in Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou.

The five-day workshop attracts over 30 officials of international organizations and local governments from 11 cities of 9 countries. It is committed to addressing current urban transportation innovation issues through discussions, case studies, field experience in Guangzhou.

Executive Vice Mayor of Guangzhou, Chen Zhiying said in the welcome remark that Guangzhou is well prepared to deepen exchange of urban governance experience with global cities. He also stressed the function of the workshop for Guangzhou International Award for Urban Innovation (Guangzhou Award) as an international platform, through which city leaders from the world could share wisdom and enhance mutual understanding.

According to Madam Bernadia Tjandradewi, the Secretary General of UCLG (United Cities and Local Governments)  ASPAC, urban transportation has more than just infrastructure, but it is about humanity. She appealed to city leaders around the world to learn from Guangzhou’s transport development experience including BRT system, bike-share using applications, integrated transport and many other strategies.

“Events like this workshop are key instruments (for us) to work together for learning, exchanging about many thins around the world,” said Octavi de la Varga, the Secretary General of METROPOLIS. Participants can get knowledge from others and to improve what they are doing on daily basis. He added, “we highlight the key issues for transportation by peer learning to have different experts and practitioners bring their experiences.”

Besides, the fourth Guangzhou Award to take place in 2018 is opened for submissions on the opening ceremony.

The award is opened to all cities and local governments, including members of Metropolis and UCLG as well as other municipalities. Applicants can submit innovative achievements in such thematic fields as public services, organization and administration, partnership and citizen involvement, smart city, sustainable city, and others.
