As at the end of 2017 there were 82,714 expats living in Guangzhou, from which 51,430 are long- termed residents, Guangzhou Municipal Public Security Bureau revealed recently during a press conference on January 29.

“Guangzhou has attracted more foreigners to come and stay in recent years, and has the third largest entry-exit volume of foreigners in China, following Shanghai and Beijing,” said Niu Baozeng, a Guangzhou Public Security Bureau official.

He added that 2.88 million foreigners moved to the city During 2017, an increase of 7.1% year- on-year. 2.39 million among them registered for temporary residence, up 6.2% year-on-year.

Who are they?

The rising number of foreigners can be attributed to Guangzhou’s strategy to market itself as the international shipping, aviation and technology innovation center, and attract people from around the world to join and develop the open economy.

According to the Public Security Bureau, Japanese, South Koreans and Americans make up the three largest overseas populations living in the city. Most of the Japanese and Koreans are employees in high-end manufacturing industry while most of the Americans are either teachers or are of Chinese descent.

In addition, 23.5% of expats with long-term resident status are working in foreign invested enterprises, joint equity or cooperative ventures in the city.

The number of foreign residents coming from African countries has been in decline over in recent years, most of whom are students or in the trading business.
