The Symposium on Building the Financial System of the 21st Century: An Agenda for China and the United States was organized by the China Development Research Foundation and Harvard Law School in 2014. The symposium is aimed at promoting an understanding between the financial systems of the US and China, building a long-term communicative working mechanism and platform, and exploring possible ways to build a financial system for the 21st century.

The annual event was held alternately in both the US and China, and this year's event was attended by Ren Xuefeng, Party secretary of Guangzhou; former US Treasury Secretary Peter Fisher; Mark Barnes, consul general of the US in Guangzhou and other top officials in the financial sector.

The three-day symposium included parallel forums and covered several topics including the opening of China's financial sector and Sino-US trade disputes, new trends in financial supervision, and mobile payment.

"This year marks the 40th anniversary of China's reform and opening-up, and China will further open up its markets, including the financial sector. The symposium, held in Guangzhou, is essential to boosting bilateral financial communication and cooperation," Ren said.

Ren also hoped that forum attendants would focus on Guangzhou, promote Guangzhou, and enhance exchanges and cooperation between Guangzhou and the US in financial services, sci-tech innovation, trade, and investments.
