Guangzhou plans to have 3 - 5 sister cities each year

In April 2018, Guangzhou has issued a “Three-year Plan for Building the city into an International Exchange Center”, saying Guangzhou aims to make more international friends and become an international exchange center by 2020.

For global exchange and sister city relationship, Guangzhou will further the “100 friendship cities plan”, said Lei Weiju, deputy director general of the Foreign Affairs Office of Guangzhou.

At present, Guangzhou has established sister city and friendly city relationships with 71 cities across the world.

Under the plan, each year Guangzhou will establish sister relationship with 3 to 5 cities along the“Belt and Road” and cities in Europe and the United States.

Exchanges and cooperation on economic and trade, science and technology, education, tourism, urban governance will be promoted.

For instance, cooperation with be strengthened with platforms such as Guangzhou, Auckland and Los Angeles Tripartite Economic Cooperation and the Research Center for Urban Sustainable Development jointly established by Guangzhou University and Linköping University (Sweden).

In addition, Guangzhou will launch more projects with its friendship cities. It will partner with Lyon in the fields of science & technology innovation, exhibition, gourmet, tourism, etc.

Also, the city has held the qualification trials for the Asia-Pacific Region of the Bocuse d'Or World Cuisine Competition, and has released the first edition of “Guangzhou Michelin Guide”.

On May 2nd, 2019, Guangzhou will celebrate the 40th anniversary of forging its first sister-city tie with Fukuoka, Japan.

According to Mr. Lei, the two cities are planing to hold a series of events including youth football matches, cultural and art performances, etc.
