82 Guangzhou athletes to compete in Guangdong games for disabled persons

The eighth Guangdong Games for Disabled Persons is set to open in Zhaoqing, Guangdong on Aug 8 and 82 athletes from Guangzhou will compete in the event from Aug 23 to 31.


Chen Xiaochun, who lost her left leg in a car accident, is traning hard to win a spot in wheelchair racing. She has been training in the sport for eight years. She said she hopes to stay active in sports even when she retires. 


Xiao Zexin, a football player with visual impairment, joined a special football team six years ago and is now a team leader. The Guangzhou games will be the last he takes part in before he goes to college. He said he hopes to have the opportunity to play football and promote the sport among his peers.


Yin Jiang, who was diagnosed with poliomyelitis at age one and was unable to walk until nine, is a two-time medalist in bike racing at disabled persons games. It was through cycling that he rebuilt his confidence in life. However, being 30 years old, he is expected to retire after two more years. 


Twenty-two-year-old swimmer, Zheng Xiaoliang, lost both of his arms in an accident. He was choosen for the provincial swimming team when he was 13 years old. Zheng, although disabled, can eat, get dressed, write and even use a computer by himself. He said that swimming has brought tremdous changes to his life. He has not only become more confident, but has also met a lot of people.
