The Singapore Nyonya Culture Exhibition co-hosted by Guangzhou Library and Consulate-General of the Republic of Singapore in Guangzhou opened at Guangzhou Library. This one-month-long exhibition (from August 12 to September 12) displays Nyonya artworks, embroideries, traditional costumes, cuisines and daily supplies.

Hundreds of years ago, some Chinese businessman immigrated to Southeast Asia and married local aborigines. Their daughters are called Nyonya and sons called Baba.

The Nyonya costume is one of the representations of Nyonya culture in Southeast Asian's lives. Based on Malay traditional costume, the Nyonya costume is influenced by western costume style and adorned with Chinese traditional embroidery of flowers. Besides, voiles are the major materials to be used in making the costume, whose colors include Chinese traditional red, pink and turquoise, the lucky color for Malayan. And most patterns on the cloth are flowers, birds, fishes, insects, Chinese dragons and phoenixes.

Also, Nyonya is a food culture. Cuisines like fried pork slices and stewed pork with bamboo shoot are mixtures of Chinese and Southeast Asian flavor. People who love sweetmeat will absolutely have a crush on Nyonya cuisine. For instance, Nyonya pastry, made of banana leaves, coconut cream, pandan leaves, sticky rice and saccharin, has a medium sweet taste, good elasticity and hardness.

"Nyonya is unfamiliar to people outside Malaysia but they keep united and active in Singapore,”said Mr Chua Teng Hoe, the consul-general. “Guangzhou is the gate of China opening to the outside world. The exhibition is expected to help people know better of Nyonya. ”
