March in Guangzhou: A sea of flowers

Each year when March arrives Guangzhou is transformed into a vast sea of flowers, filled with different types of blossom and fresh green leaves. The whole city becomes a major tourist attraction during the springtime.

We bet you have heard that thousands of citizens flooded into the campus of South China University of Agriculture to admire the blossom last weekend. But that’s not the only place to enjoy spring flowers in Guangzhou. So where are some of the best places? That’s where our guide comes in.

No. 1 Sunflower Garden (百万葵园)

This Sunflower Garden is the first of its kind, with one million sunflower plants whose seeds were mainly imported from Japan. In addition to sunflowers, various other exotic flowers and rare plants from other parts of the world are also here waiting for you and your camera.

Flower of the season: begonia

Opening Hours: 8:30 – 17:30

Admission: RMB 170 per ticket

Add.: Xinken Town, Nansha District, Guangzhou

Metro: Take Metro Line 4 and get off at Jiaomen, then transfer to Bus No.2 (Nansha).

No. 2 South China Botanical Garden (华南植物园)

As one of the largest gardens in China, the South China Botanical Garden is composed of over 30 specialized gardens, the planting including magnolias, bamboo, palms, gingers, orchids and medicinal plants. With over a million specimens, you can find almost all the common flowers seen around Guangzhou.

Flower of the season: Mucuna birdwoodiana

Opening Hours: 7:30 – 17:30

Admission: RMB 20 per ticket

Add.: No. 723 Xingke Road, Tianhe District, Guangzhou

Metro: Take Metro Line 6 and get off at the Botanical Garden station.

No. 3 Yuntai Garden (云台花园)

Being the largest garden of its kind in China, Yuntai Garden has over 200 kinds of rare Chinese and foreign flowers, the tulips especially providing beautiful scenery.

Flower of the season: tulip

Opening Hours: 8:00 - 18:00

Admission: RMB 10 per ticket

Add.: South Road of Baiyun Mountian, Guangyuan Zhong Road, Baiyun District, Guangzhou

Bus: Take one of the following buses and get off at Yuntai Garden station, Bus No. 24, 63, 240, 245, 285, or 522.

No. 4 Peach Blossom Valley (桃花涧)

The Peach Blossom Valley is an eco-tourist attraction themed around peach blossoms and is very popular among both local residents and tourists alike for its abundance of peach blossom in spring. This area also features a quaint rustic environment set in small mountain gullies, with bridges and simple structures.

Flower of the season: peach blossom

Opening Hours: 8:00 – 17:00

Admission: RMB 5 per ticket for entrance of Baiyun Mountian, extra RMB 5 per ticket for the valley during January - March every year.

Add.: Baiyun Mountain, Guangyuan Zhong Road, Baiyun District, Guangzhou

Bus: Take one of the following buses and get off at the Foreign Languages College/Baiyun Mountain West Gate stop, Bus No.36, 38, 66, 76A, 76, 127, 223, 245, 265, 529, 805, 864, 891, University Town Line 1, Peak Express Line 16, Tourism Bus No. 3, Bus No.9 (Night).

No. 5 Liuhua Lake Park (流花湖公园)

Liuhua Lake Park is the number one destination to see the Chinese rose, presenting more than 10 varieties of Chinese roses this spring. What’s more, there are eight other gardens spread between the south and north gates of the park. Each garden features a perfect spot for taking pictures.

Flower of the season: Chinese rose

Opening Hours: 6:00-22:00

Admission: Free

Add.: No. 100 Liuhua Road, Yuexiu District, Guangzhou

Metro: Exit D1 of Yuexiu Park station, Line 2; or Ximenkou station, Line 1.

No. 6 Liuxihe National Forest Park (流溪河国家森林公园)

Liuxihe National Forest Park in March is full to the brim with many kinds of blooms, such as violets, peach blossom, magnolia liliiflora, and acacia flos. What you may not know is that Liuxi Lake in the park provides 70% of Guangzhou’s drinking water, so it is also known as Guangzhou’s ‘mother lake’.

Flower of the season: violet

Opening Hours: 8:00 – 17:30

Admission: RMB 40 per ticket for the gate

Add.: Liuxihe Forest Center, Liangkou Town, Conghua District, Guangzhou

Self-driving route: Guangcong Highway → 105 National Highway (about 1.5 hours) Coach: Take Guangzhou - Conghua bus from either of the main coach stations in Guangzhou, then from Conghua Bus Station take the Forest Park Bus at Jiekou.

No. 7 Shimen National Forest Park (石门国家森林公园)

Much loved by locals, the ‘Arcadia of Guangzhou’, Shimen National Forest Park is famous not only for its flowers but also for its rare animals, such as beavers and pangolins. In spring, you can enjoy fields of oil seed rape, as well as peach and plum blossoms.

Flower of the season: Oil seed rape

Opening Hours: 9:00 – 17:00

Admission: RMB 40 per ticket

Add.: Northeast of Conghua District, Guangzhou

Bus: Take a bus from Tianhe Coach Terminal to Conghua Coach Terminal, then take a taxi to Shimen National Forest Park (about RMB 100);

Self-driving route: From Guangzhou → Airport Expressway → Jiebei Expressway → National Highway 105 → Conghua → Jiekou Town → National Forest Park.

No. 8 Trendsee Cherry Blossom Aulacese Park (天适樱花悠乐园)

Trendsee Cherry Blossom Aulacese Park is one of the largest cherry blossom parks in China. Thousands of cherry trees fill the park with colour. There are cherry blossom themed tourist routes, cherry blossom camps and a discovery park for children.

Opening hours: 9:00-17:30

Admission: RMB 60 per person

Add.: Xihe Village, Chengjiao Street, Conghua District, Guangzhou

Bus: Take a long-distance bus from one of the major passenger stations in Guangzhou to Conghua Bus Station. Then take Bus No. 6 to get to the park.

Self-driving route: Starting from downtown Guangzhou, Airport Expressway → Paijie Expressway → National Road No. 105 → the government building of Wenquan Town → Guoqiang Bee Farm → Xihe Village → the park.

No. 9 University campuses

Along with the South China University of Agriculture campus, you can also enjoy viewing beautiful flowers across many of the university campuses around Guangzhou during March. Our highlights would include Sun Yat-sen University’s south campus and the Guangdong University of Technology in the Higher Education Mega Center.

Flowers of the season: bauhinia, Tabebuia chrysantha, azalea and cherry blossom

Admission: Free

Metro: Take metro Line 3, and get off at Wushan station to go to South China University of Agriculture; take metro Line 8, and get off at Sun Yat-sen University station to go to Sun Yat-sen University; take metro Line 4 and get off at Higher Education Mega Center South station to go to Guangdong University of Technology.

No. 10 Parks & neighborhoods

Finally and most importantly, you can never forget the green spaces and leafy streets dotted around the city. Just as Auguste Rodin said, “Beauty is found everywhere. Our eyes do not show a lack of sense of beauty but a lack of observation.” So what are you waiting for? Grab your camera, and get walking!
