"School of Rock -The Musical" is hitting the Guangzhou Opera House from April 19 to 28. It is the first time for the Australian troupe to perform in Guangzhou after its tour in Shanghai and Beijing.

Based on the film of the same name, "School of Rock—The Musical" tells the story of wannabe rock star, Dewey Finn, who poses as a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school. When he discovers his students' musical talents, he enlists his fifth-graders to form a rock group and conquer the Battle of the Bands.

With a new score from Andrew Lloyd Webber, lyrics by Glenn Slater, book by Julian Fellowes and an incredible cast of kids shredding guitars, pounding drums and rocking out live, "School of Rock" is a treat for all ages.

A fan meeting was held Thursday at the Guangzhou Opera House. "'School of Rock' is important to the theater because it introduces a new generation to stage performance. While the performers range from children to adults, so do the audience. The kids in our team are from the age of 9 to 13," said Brent Hill, who plays the character Dewey Finn in the musical. "They are quite young, and they've been playing for more than half of their lives (laughters). For example, Zane Blumeris, 9 years old, who plays the character Zack in the musical, started to learn guitar at the age of four. Other kids also started learning music since a very young age."

When asked about his understanding of rock and roll, Hill said it is not about the loud music or a band that tries to make as much noises as it can. "Rock's about getting down to your core self," Hill said. "Rock is really about the electricity inside you."

As the kids prepare for the Battle of the Bands, can Dewey make them embrace the empowering message of rock? Theatergoers are invited to tune their guitars, raise their salute to rock and discover the answer themselves.
