Update: 2017-06-12     Source: english.gz.gov.cn

On June 11, the temperature was about 38 degree centigrade along the Pearl River in Guangzhou, however, the high temperature didn't affect the athletes on the river and the crowds on the banks. At the reach of Pearl River between the north gate square of Sun Yat-sun University and Guangzhou Bridge, the 2017 Guangzhou International Dragon Boat Invitational Tournament was ongoing among over 100 dragon boat teams from five continents.

The domestic dragon boat teams are from Guangzhou, Foshan, Dongguan, Qingyuan, Huizhou, Zhaoqing, Jieyang, Zhuhai, Shunde, etc. And the overseas teams mainly come from Canada, USA, Singapore, etc. There are 12 traditional dragon boats, 83 standard dragon boats, 28 colored dragon boats, and 7 parade dragon boats. Over 5000 athletes attended the tournament.

This has been the 24th edition of Guangzhou International Dragon Boat Invitational Tournament which is one of the most important traditional games in Guangzhou. It has become a "bridge" connecting Guangzhou and the world. Many foreign athletes and audiences said that the Dragon Boat Invitation Tournament is a window for them to get a closer look at Guangzhou and dragon boat culture.

Michael from Wellington, New Zealand told the reporter that this was his first time to compete in a dragon boat race in Guangzhou, and he enjoyed the race a lot although his team didn't make it to the final. Michael pointed out that he came with over 20 teammates, and the oldest is 70 years old. Everyone was exhausted after the race, but we were very happy, said Michael.

When talking about Guangzhou, Michael used the word "beautiful" for many times. He told that he loved the view in Guangzhou, the citizens here were very enthusiastic, and this was also the first time he saw so many audiences in a boat race. He said that he would come back for the competition next year and try to win the title.
